This February has been full of activities, festivals, and community spirit in Steamboat Springs. Things started off with a bang when the town came together to celebrate the Olympians that are from Steamboat, live in Steamboat, or are somehow associated with Steamboat (many of the winter athletes have trained for a season or two here on our various hills, jumps or tracks). On a snowy evening, thousands of fans gathered around a huge stage set up in the middle of downtown Steamboat to see off the current athletes on the way to the Vancouver Winter Olympics. The spectacle was capped by a fireworks show from the top of the county courthouse.
Later that weekend, main street was closed down again for the 97th annual Winter Carnival. Local high school students displayed their snow sculpture artwork along the side of Lincoln Avenue and the street was shut down on Saturday and Sunday for the horse events and parade. If you've never seen it, the Steamboat Winter Carnival is spectacle, with children on skis being towed down the middle of the road by horses, doing various acts from slalom, to jumping, to simply seeing who can go the fastest. The climax of the horse drawn events is the shovel pull, the only event where you must be at least 18 to enter. Crazy contestants jump on a shovel of their choice and are pulled speeding down the snow cover street mere inches behind the hooves of a galloping horse.
Last Sunday, the town came to standstill again to watch the Olympics as our team of local Nordic Combined athletes competed in their first combined event. After the jumping section of the event, Steamboat Natives Todd Lodwick and Johnny Spillane were sitting in 2nd and 4th place. The cross-country race started a less than two hours later with competitors starting in the position in which they finished in the jumping section. Todd Lodwick started the race in 2nd place, 34 seconds behind the leader. Johnny Spillane started 44 seconds behind the leader. As the race progressed our two local athletes rallied for the lead with Bill Demong, another racer with strong Steamboat ties, closing the gap too. When they came to the finish line, a final heart thumping sprint left Johnny Spillane with the silver medal, Todd Lodwick narrowly missed the Bronze with a 4th place finish and Bill Demong finished strong in 6th place. The city of Steamboat is nothing but proud of our local athletes!
