Spring changes

Spring is here and Steamboat is going through some changes. Steamboat City Council approved up to $2.5million for base area improvement at the ski area to start this summer. It was a unanimous decision and will provide many jobs and much desired activity at the base area this summer. If you're up near the ski area, make sure you stop in at The Powder Room which is open through mud-season. Also, take a tour of One Steamboat Place - but make sure you have a guide because it is easy to get lost.
There is quite a bit of pine tree removal going on near Thunderhead high speed lift. Some walking and riding trails may be closed and the disc-golf course will not be returning there this year.

In case you missed this weeks’ edition of Barron’s, the cover story written by Karen Hube is germane to Steamboat Springs and all of Colorado’s resort markets. The gist of the article is this:
• The luxury resort market has taken a hit, as much as 20-30%.
• The luxury summer-home market has held up better than the total market for luxury homes.
• The time is now to start shopping…waiting for a bottom is dangerous in that the top-tier market is apt to snap back quickly.
• There is much pent-up demand for high-end real estate and that will drive the market as confidence returns.
• Sales in the upper level of the the second-home market tend to be less cyclical than the rest of the real estate market because high end real estate is viewed as an investment asset class.

Hey, in case you didn't already know it, Steamboat Springs is a place with "great bones." This is according to the article in Forbes.com written by Everett Potter on December 8, 2008. If you want to read the article, here is the link. Otherwise, I'll hit the highpoints.
Intrawest plans to invest as much as $1 billion in Steamboat Springs in the next 5 years....yes, you read that right...and this article was published recently! This classic western town has a great mix of mom-and-pop places, galleries, sushi bars, and boutiques.
